Crownhill Fort

Designed by Captain E. F. Du Cane, to be the principal fort of Plymouth’s North Eastern defences, there are eleven forts in this defensive line, stretching from the river Tamar, to the West , through to the River Plym, to the East.

The purpose of  this line of forts was to defend Plymouth and the Royal Dockyard at Devonport from attack from the rear, the perceived threat was from the French under the leadership of Napoleon III.

Building work of these forts started during 1863 and took 9 years to complete.  George Baker the building contractor went bankrupt during the 1866 strike, the work was completed by the Royal Engineers, who the occupied the fort, cost of construction was estimated to be £76,409.
