John Symons spent a long time persuading the management of Crownhill Fort that a Gun Detachment would enhance the visitor attraction of the Fort.
During 1997 a recruitment campaign took place and eight applications were received, the barracks were furnished in true Victorian style, uniforms were ordered, training for the Detachment started. Over the next few years more cannon were installed.
About 2001 a service record was discovered of someone who had enlisted at the Fort, this was stamped with No1 Depot Company, the group now had a title.
Over the years members left the group and new members joined, we continue to recruit interested people, at present we have eight members.
